Police department gets grant for UTV, e-bike
The Manchester-by-the-Sea Police Department received a $23,623 federal grant to buy a UTV and an electric bicycle, giving officers more ways to reach areas cruisers can't and respond to emergencies and missing-person searches.
The Town of Manchester-by-the-Sea announced that its police department has received $23,623 through the 2025 Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant to expand its patrol capabilities.
The funding allowed the department to purchase a Polaris utility terrain vehicle and a Cannondale electric bicycle. Officials said the additions will give officers more versatility when responding to emergencies, searching for missing persons and patrolling areas that are difficult to reach by cruiser.
Sgt. Louf served as the grant manager and developed the department's application, which was selected for the funding. "The JAG grant has been instrumental in helping to enhance our department's mobility by allowing us to purchase both a UTV and an E-Bike," Sgt. Louf said in the release. He added that the equipment "will significantly cut down on response time, as well as allow us easier access to areas that were historically more difficult to patrol," and noted the purchase came "at no cost to the Manchester taxpayer."
The department purchased the UTV with assistance from New Boston Crane and Sled, a Massachusetts-based business, and bought the electric bicycle from Riverside Cycles, a local business in Manchester.
Chief Mark McCoy said in the release, "We are very pleased to be able to offer these expanded services to our residents and are very appreciative of this grant opportunity." He also thanked Sgt. Louf for coordinating the effort and obtaining the grant funding.
